Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects carpal tunnel, a narrow pathway located on the wrist joint. It contains nerves and veins, which passes inside the carpal tunnel. In this condition, there is an inflammation of carpal tunnel which causes pressure on nerves and leading to nerve injury.
When median nerve is impinged, it causes numbness, weakness and pain. Our median nerve is responsible for sensation to the thumb and fingers. When it is compressed the pain will radiate to hand and thumb as well. These symptoms can lead to loss of grip of the affected hand.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by variety of reasons. Inflammation in carpal tunnel causes extra pressure on median nerve, repetitive trauma and fluid buildup are the common causes. some other causes includes:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Sprain or fracture of the wrist
- Fluid retention during pregnancy
Typical Symptoms are commonly present on affected hand. It includes:
- Numbness or tingling sensations
